Travel on a shoestring
House sitting is a fun, immersive way to experience this magnificent country - without paying a cent for accommodation!
Western - York

We may need someone for 2-4 weeks during the maple sugar season. So dates are not firm until well into February.
Our house is half an hour NW of Fredericton. About ten miles of the road are gravel, but well cleared in winter.
We have an old dog who lives in the house; one mother cat who goes in and out; two kittens who live in the barn; six chickens in their own house; wild birds that come to outdoor feeders.
All these must be kept fed and watered daily.
There are about a dozen different houseplants which will need to be watered on a schedule.
A short path to the door from the driveway to keep clear of snow using a shovel.
The house is very small (584 sq ft) with a Queen size and a twin bed in separate rooms. Slipper tub and rain-shower. The tv channels run on a hotspot from your phone, as there is no satellite or cable or landline in our area. We do have a dvd player. There is an outdoor bonfire box which can be seen through the picture windows as well.
Lovely walks on two roads, almost no traffic. Very nice walks in the woods. Bring snowshoes if you like, or x-country skis.
Fredericton has a very active nightlife with pubs, billiards, cinema, live theatre, museums and galleries, the Legion for dancing in Friday nights, excellent walking trails along the St John river and city parks, swimming pool, lots of cafes and restaurants. Skating on Killarney Lake.
Our property is a very quiet retreat with lots of clear night sky views and beautiful sunsets. The only traffic is local. You can’t hear the neighbors.
The old dog likes a walk but it isn’t necessary. He sleeps a lot now. The barn cats are relatively self sufficient as long as their feeder is kept filled, and we like to give them fresh water. Same for the chickens, except a few eggs need to be gathered daily. Kitty the cat is timid with strangers but she spends about 50% of her time in the house. Wildbird feeders need to be topped up.
We won’t know the sap run season until much closer to late February/early March.
My roommate is also hoping to find a man to help with odd jobs around the acreage. There’s a separate tiny house available as accommodation for this person.
Good fishing in brooks and rivers within a 15 minute drive.
Anyone interested in the housesit or the odd job assist should be someone who values and enjoys the wild, nature, quiet, and privacy, as well as pets.
